The airplane flight is booked, I’ve added a travel companion, and the training has intensified. If Covid cooperates, I’ll be hiking over the Pyrenees mountains in 99 days. One minute I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve and can’t wait to begin, the next I’m sure that I’m going to be unable to complete the hike because of my previous injuries or myriad other limitations I impose on myself, mental or physical. When I begin to spiral into doubt I go for a walk around the neighborhood or for a hike at Round Valley. Hiking requires that I remain in the moment, navigating the terrain and appreciating the beauty of the valley. It’s difficult to worry about the future when I’m trying to avoid tree roots and slippery rocks in my path.
