12th-century church and abbey in Sauvelade

The countryside in the farthest part of southern France is gorgeous, full of grazing sheep and devoid of Internet. It’s forced me to unplug from the world. What have I missed?

While the world went on I was lucky enough to stay with lovely Mari Jo and her dog Licky in her little home in the tiny village of Lichos (Population 49). No restaurants or grocery stores. Mari Jo was kind to pack a baguette, ham, and cheese for my hike the next day. No services on that section either.

I hiked to the Stele Monument which marks the point 3 pilgrimage routes converge to continue to Santiago.

Today’s hike was the shortest yet, only 8 miles or so. I did not see another pilgrim the entire day, just me and the sheep. Blissful.

Tomorrow I’ll have an easy 12 mile hike to St. Jean Pied de Port where I’ll have a rest day and gear up to climb the Pyrenees into Spain. I’ve decided to give myself a pilgrim makeover: new shoes, socks and a shirt, fresh for part 2 of my journey. I’ll have to remember to say “Buen Camino!” instead of “Bon Chemin!”

PS

I belted out this song while hiking today; I hope the sheep didn’t mind. 🎶🐏

Michel to me is an inspiration, and I will for sure call him in much link more than he has been doing recently, because he still has a lot of give. He has all the historical knowledge. I link just spent a day with him in the archives. He has a link perfect memory of what he did and what he does. To me he is a complement to what we have to do, and I want to integrate him more in what we have to do.

How many days to get over the mountains and into Spain? I hope the weather cooperates and you are able to take it slow. So wishing I could fly to Spain and walk a while with you. Can't believe you back-tracked because you got a ride! Your dedication is admirable. Only 900 or so kilometers to go girl!

I climb 16 miles up and over the Pyrenees tomorrow! I’ll cross over into Spain about halfway through the hike. I’ll leave at about 7am. It looks like the weather will be awesome! Last time I hiked it the fog was so thick that I didn’t see many views. Thanks so much for the encouragement, Teresa! ❤️🇫🇷🇪🇸🥾

Loved watching the video. What a beautiful spot to take a break! I think your shoes look pretty good, considering the number of miles you have walked so far! Bon Chemin, Sis! ❤️

The mildew smell of those shoes is intense! Actually, I’ll probably wear them over the Pyrenees because they’re well broken in.
