Perry and I have arrived in Oviedo, Spain to hike the oldest, and some say the most challenging, Camino. It will take us about 2 weeks to arrive in Santiago de Compostela 188 miles north.

I’m thrilled to share the Camino experience with Perry since he’s patiently listened to my stories about my previous hikes. Also, his broken-California Spanish is appreciated here and really sets a positive tone with folks we meet.

We spent the first evening sampling the local cider and stews that the Asturias region is famous for.

Today we’ve been exploring the city, the cathedral, and gorgeous park. After meeting several fellow pilgrims, we toured the cathedral museum which houses gorgeous art and artifacts. We lit candles in memory of Perry’s Continente and Gomes grandmothers.

We were a bit perplexed by the Woody Allen statue, later reading that city officials were so pleased by comments he made extolling its beauty that they decided to commemorate him with a life size statue.

Tomorrow morning we will hike about 16 miles over the nearby hills to the city of Grado. Hopefully, there will be a couple of cafes in the villages along the way where we can rest and refuel.
